Dental integration can improve overall health and lower costs
November 24, 2020We studied member data to see how integrating dental and medical plans can improve overall health and lower costs. The report provides the results of three studies which show how our integrated health care program, Anthem Whole Health Connection, improves oral health and overall member wellbeing.
The studies found that:
- Integrating dental insights into Care Management programs resulted in:
- 20% fewer heart attacks on myocardial infarctions
- 13% fewer inpatient admissions
- 10% fewer emergency room visits
- Providing enhanced dental benefits for members needing extra dental services for their overall health led to:
- 81% (Enhanced) and 79% (Regular) fewer emergency dental office visits
- 34% (Enhanced) and 26% (Regular) lower total medical costs
- Using dental data to identify gaps in care produced:
- 22% fewer inpatient admissions and 17% fewer emergency room visits
- 23.7% lower inpatient and ER costs
- 14.6% lower overall medical costs
Anthem Whole Health Connection connects the administration and wellbeing programs of medical, pharmacy, and ancillary plans. This connection simplifies the benefits experience for members and their employers, and improves the performance of the employers’ overall health benefits. The program helps identify at-risk members and integrates care for improved overall health and lower costs for members and employers.
